Kayaking in the western Algarve

5 days paddling

Level: Moderate - previous experience in kayaking required

Group Size: 4 - 6 persons

Trip description

This wonderful kayaking trip starts in our Natural Park " Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina". We explore the highlights of the western Algarve from the mystical Cape St. Vincent in Sagres to the Ponta da Piedade in Lagos with its famous caves and rock formations.

Sagres is the perfect place for sea kayaking as it is the connection between the west and south coasts, each with very different sea conditions. Both intermediate and advanced paddlers will enjoy.

Above all, the versatility of the coast is exciting. In just one day it is possible to experience the most diverse impressions: areas with strong winds are interrupted by sheltered sections, where you can comfortably paddle the caves. Several headlands share the sea, often with strong swells on one side and calmer seas on the other. You are also invited to use possible conditions for rock hopping or kayak surf!

The respective weather conditions complete the adventure, because we can adapt spontaneously - with a guide who knows every meter of the coast by heart, with all its peculiarities!

For accommodation our groups can stay in a family-owned hostel in Sagres which offers all comfort that you need, including snack-bar, swimming pool and laundry room for washing and drying your kayak clothing. The hostel has private bedrooms with own bathroom or dorms with shared bathrooms.

Of course, you are also free to organise your own accommodation if you prefer.

We use the following kayaks: Valley Sirona, Valley Aquanaut, Venture Capella, Wilderness Zephyr and Wilderness Tsunami. On request we offer double kayaks like Prijon Poseidon and Rainbow Atlantis.

Example of a 5 day itinerary

Day 1

Transfer to the beach and training of rescue techniques.

Afterwards you will be guided on your first tour along the beautiful coastline of Sagres with hidden caves and secluded beaches. We finish our first day with a welcome dinner, having traditional Portuguese food in a local restaurant.

Day 2

On your second day we explore the impressive cliffs around the unique Cape St. Vincent, the south-westernmost point of mainland Europe. It is an exceptional experience, as the cliffs rise nearly vertically from the Atlantic to a height of 75 meters, with one of Europe's brightest lighthouses on it.

Day 3

We paddle from Ingrina beach to Lagos, visiting the famous Ponta da Piedade with its beautiful rock formations, arcs and caves.

Day 4

The fourth day we start in the small fisher village Ferragudo and continue along the beautiful scenery towards Armação de Pêra.

Day 5

We start at the huge Bordeira beach, where big sand dunes and the Bordeira river form a lagoon. We paddle along the rugged scenery of Carrapateira on the west coast and have some time for playing in the waves.

This day ends with our traditional farewell dinner.
